The East Midlands Journey in Faith (JiF) course is 'education for discipleship' and enables people to explore their own Christian faith in-depth in the company of others from different backgrounds.  Participants do not need any formal qualifications to join the course - just a desire to learn.

There are several reasons that people may have for taking the course:

  • Simply wanting to know more about the Christian faith and how it connects with everyday life and work
  • Desiring to explore vocation to ministry - lay or ordained
  • Entering Higher Education by studying Theology

The course is open to anyone (of any denomination) who would like to grow in confidence in their Christian faith and discipleship. Participants need to be open to learning and being challenged in what they believe - it is much more than a 'house-group'.

What is Journey in Faith?

Journey in Faith is a three term Christian Discipleship Course in 10 week terms from September to July.  It's taught using a set of course manuals, in small, local groups.  Depending on student numbers and availability of tutors, we will organise local tutorial groups throughout Nottinghamshire.  There will be some teaching days (one or two per term).

We ask you to prepare for and attend the group sessions, offering yourself to learn with the other group members.  There are three ways to take the course.

Term 1: Exploring Faith
Sessions include an opportunity to consider our own faith journeys and an introduction to Theological Reflection.

Term 2: God's Call on our Responses
Sessions include an introduction to the Old Testament

Term 3: Development of the Church
Sessions include an introduction to the New Testament and Church Doctrine - what we say we believe.

Running through all 3 terms will be evenings entitled Ministry, Mission and Vocation, when we will consider how we discern our gifts, hearing God's call and making our responses to God.

Written work (or equivalent) is not obligatory but there will be the option of completing one small project or essay each term.  for those wanting to progress to further study we ask for at least one essay in the course of the year.

Practical Details

The cost of the course is kept to a minimum by subsidy- we ask that you cover the cost of materials - this is £120.

Note that taking the course offers no guarantee or validation for taking up any ministry or role within a local church.  Discernment for vocations, roles and ministries always lies with the local church in the first instance.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER JiF?

Successful completion of the one year course "Journey in Faith" (JiF) will enable students to apply for specialised education and training for lay ministry within the diocese and East Midlands region in one of the two routes.  Either a 1 year study for diocesan Recognised Lay Ministry (RLM) or a 3-year course for Reader.

LAY MINISTRY SPECIALISM - THE DIOCESAN CERTIFICATE IN LAY MINISTRY

If you are successfully selected for your chosen specialism then the final year of training will consist of 60 hours of learning organised flexibly to suit the group.  However it may not take place quite so close to your home base, but usually transport can be arranged and times negotiated with the group.

The Ministry Specialisms are:

  • Children's Work
  • Youth Work
  • Pastoral Care
  • Discipleship at Work
  • Community Ministry
  • Helping Adults Learn
  • Witness and Evangelism
  • Worship and Music

The training is shaped such that each person completing the course can take their place in local ministry teams as Recognised Lay Ministers collaborating together with other lay and ordained leaders.

If you have already studied to the equivalent of the Year 1 JiF course then it is possible to seen an exemption - please consult the Lay Training Officer, The Revd Alison Cox about this.  Existing Readers can always take a specialism year to add to their skills.

READER MINISTRY

Selection for regional training for Reader ministry will lead to enrolment on the three year Reader Training Course via The Southern Northwest Training Partnership (SNWTP).

After completing the first two years of the SNWTP course, you will be licensed by the Diocesan Bishop if they give consent.  There is then a third year of compulsory training, post-licensing.
