Celebrating Older People

"Notts Facing a Population Time Bomb."  This was a recent headline in the local press.  The elderly population of England is growing - and Notts is ahead of the national average.  It has been described as the biggest transformation in society since the Welfare State.  By 2020 the number of over 65's in Notts is forecast to increase by 33%.  And the number of 85s - an age group which needs a greater level of care - will go up a massive 45%.  The growth is 6% ahead of the national average in England and means Councils will have to drastically overhaul the way they deliver care.

The Countrywide Older Peoples Partneship is one mechanism which exists to respond to these dynamics and is a key forum for the church to engage with various statutory and older peoples groups and organisations.  In this diocese we benefit from the ministry of countless older people who pray, worship and connect with the local community in so many ways.  We also minister to many older people, visiting care homes, organising luncheon clubs and befriending schemes.

The Diocesan Older Peoples Advisory Group (DOPAG) has been set up to help co-ordinate and celebrate what wer are doing and to explore how we can work more effectively with other potential partners.  We also seek to identify training opportunities and how to share good pratice.
