The work of the church is not confided to the parishes and there are many chaplains both ordained and lay working in sector ministries. Clergy and lay chaplains engaged in the sector ministries in prisons, hospitals, the commercial sector, emergency services and so on. The Bishop's Chaplain for Sector Ministries is responsible to the Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham for the affirmation, resourcing and encouragement of Sector Clergy in the diocese in their ministry with people in their specialised contexts.

This involves

• Involvement in the recruitment of chaplains on behalf of the Bishop in association with the statutory bodies concerned, principally the NHS, the Ministry of Justice and the Emergency Services and other relevant bodies.
• Maintaining a link between chaplains in hospitals, prisons etc and the Diocesan Bishop by whom they are licensed.
• The pastoral care of chaplains in Sector Ministries on behalf of the Bishop.
• Raising the profile of clergy in these posts in the perception of the parochial clergy and in that of the Diocesan Community as a whole.
• Liaison with chaplains of other denominations and multi-faith chaplains in these specialised circumstances.

The Venerable Robin Turner has himself an extensive experience of Sector Ministry having served for nearly 29 years in the Royal Air Force Chaplains' Branch, finishing as Chaplain-in-Chief and Archdeacon of the Royal Air Force.  He also worked as a school chaplain, for 4 years at Dulwich College, during which time he was Chairman of the School Chaplains' Conference and as Chaplain to the Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham, in which time he has gained an extensive knowledge of ministry in the different sectors for which he is responsible.
