![]() | The Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham Bishop Paul joins us as Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham after serving as Bishop of Southampton since June 2004 and before that in parochial ministry, as an area dean, and as an evangelist with Scripture Union. Bishop Paul is also the present chair of CMS, the Church Mission Society, a position he hands on later this year. He maintains however a passionate interest in mission, and also for the Church in Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda and the wider Anglican Communion. Bishop Paul’s other big interest is with children and young people in church and society; in 2004 he was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury to be the advocate for children of behalf of the bishops. He has written on this area of mission and ministry as well as on practical spirituality in his book ‘Temptation and Testing’. Bishop Paul is determined alongside this emphasis on mission, on children and the place of the Church of England in the wider Anglican Communion, to be a pastor and teacher for the people and their clergy of the diocese with his episcopal colleague, Bishop Tony, the Bishop of Sherwood. Being involved in confirmations and licensings is most important for Bishop Paul. He also sees a vital role in supporting, challenging and resourcing the Dean of the Cathedral, the Archdeacons and the Chief Executive, and all that that happens from the Diocesan Offices at Dunham House and the Cathedral, especially mission and ministry in and through parishes and sector ministries in schools, other places of education, in prisons, the work place and hospitals. Most Sundays Bishop Paul will be out and about in parishes in the diocese, and he has planned visits to all the vicars, rectors and priests in charge in their homes, before meeting them, other clergy, readers and churchwardens and other lay people in the deaneries. Bishop Paul is married to Rosemary who is a trained nurse and midwife, who has been working recently as an art technician and care assistant. She is also very interested in craft and design. They have four children; Sarah who will be joining the sixth form at the Minster School in September 2010, and Caroline, David and Andrew who now live away from home.
