CHURCH HISTORY PROJECT

The HLF (Heritage Lottery Fund) has given us a large sum of money to develop this project, along with Tourism & Research, which has to be matched with volunteer hours logged

·         The SILC (Schools in Local Churches) has been absorbed into this project.

·         There are close links/similarities between this and Time Travelling in Parishes.

·          History must always be at the forefront, but also showing the church as living & current.

·         We must use/make ref to the CHP website http://southwellchurches.history.nottingham.ac.uk

Aims

The key aims and benefits of CHP/Open churches would be:

1. Mission – opening up churches, building relationships with schools and children, sharing church as a place of faith, as well as history
2. Partnership – between schools and churches, church & community, history & life today

Who?

Along with a small Education Steering group, the project is led by

  1. Nick Harding (Project Manager, Southwell & Nottingham Diocese Children’s Officer)
  2. Maureen Collins (Chair of Education Group, Church Schools Development Officer, Southwell & Nottingham Diocese)

We do however need lots of volunteers to trial materials. If your school would like to be involved, or your church would like to take it into a local school, please contact us c/o maureencsdo@southwell.anglican.org

We are working alongside the Research Group, based at Nottingham University, and the Tourism Group who are aiming to get churches 'on the map' as interesting historical & community sites to visit.

We are accountable to HLF, as well as the Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham

What?

The idea is to produce a resource pack with ideas to help a church better welcome local schools in, as part of their Religious Studies and other courses. This may include ideas for activities which will satisfy school attainment targets whilst giving children a picture of a living church, and lots of historical interest.

Generic materials will be produced, but then church members will be able to personalise it according the the unique interesting historical features of the individual church.
We also want to make materials appropriate for visits by non-statutory groups such as cubs, brownies, youth groups etc

If you have ideas, or things that you are already doing that work, please let us know! We welcome ideas from schools or churches, or individuals!
