Who's Who in the Education Team

Howard Worsley, Director of Education     sheilab@southwell.anglican.org                                                                                                                             
Howard's role is to enable the diocesan Board of Education to oversee and steer the work of a very able team of Education Personnel.  He also ensures that all the necessary links are kept in place with other Diocesan offices.  He visits schools in the Diocese and aims to act as a pastoral supporter for Heads and Teachers in the schools.

As the Education Department expands into Higher Education and Further Education, Howard's task is to develop strategy and to resource the increased personnel.  As well as the three University Chaplains, this includes the Church School Links Officer & Diocesan Schools Worker.  Howard is also an active researcher into Children's Spirituality and is currently directing the project "Bible Stories Between Children and their Parents."

Sheila Barker, Assistant to the Director of Education  sheilab@southwell.anglican.org

 

Sheila’s role includes the management of the day to day running of the department, support for headteachers, administering the Board of Education, advising on admissions, occasional field work in schools and deputising for the Director in his absence. 

A major part of Sheila’s work is to pick up much of the detail of the Director’s work, freeing him up for strategic development.       

Beryl Freer, Executive  Schools Officer  bfreer@southwell.anglican.org                                                                                                                                           Beryl is the Executive Schools Officer in the team.  Her role is to support Aided schools in all aspects of building work.  This is from inception of the idea, working with the consultant architect and working with the contractor, to the funding of the project.  Beryl will discuss with Head Teachers and Governors their role and responsibilities in delivering a building project, support them in their liaison with all external agents and suppliers (architects, contractors etc.) as well as discussing and advising on aspects of the Governors contribution of 10% to the project.  Beryl ensures that the funding of the project is organised as smoothly as possible , and will ensure that the Governors are aware of all costs involved and will advocate on their behalf with the SDBE and the DfES for financial support such as loans.

Anne Lumb & Jane Lewis, Diocesan Schools Advisers  janeandanne@southwell.anglican.org         
Anne and Jane work as School Advisers on a job share basis.  They visit the schools in the Diocese offering support in the teaching of RE and in the delivery of collective worship.  When schools are preparing for their section 48 denominational inspection, Jane and Anne will offer support in terms of looking at policies that are in place, and offering schemes of work for RE.  Post inspection, they will offer support to schools in moving forward on the recommendations made by the inspectors.  They also run INSET in schools across the diocese.

Nick Harding, Children's Ministry Adviser  nick@southwell.anglican.org
Nick's role is to support churches in all areas connected with children.  That may mean consultation, resourcing, child safety issues, church-school links, or anything else churches need.  He runs training events, and produces a termly information sheet for churches.

Angela Heywood, Youth Ministry Adviser angela.heywood@southwell.anglican.org
Angela 's role is to provide training and advice on youth work issues for churches and youth leaders.  She also works with young people, encouraging them to grow in their faith, to develop their gifts and to be actively involved in their churches and the diocese at all levels.

"I have a great desire to see the Church become more involved in community youth work and I am keen to support churches in building new partnerships for their mission to the young people in our diocese."

Alison Jacobson, Education Administrative Officer  alisonj@southwell.anglican.org
Alison aims to ensure that all Church School governing bodies have a full complement of DBE representative foundation governors.  She supports schools and churches in their work and maintains an efficient administrative function for the Youth and Children's Officers in their mission with schools and parishes.

Marlene Shrive, Resource Room Co-ordinator
Marlene is a retired teacher who acts as volunteer co-ordinator for the Resources room. She works one day per week and ensures that the resources are well organised. She assists the Diocesan Advisers by putting together project collections to take into schools and churches.

Karen Gillespie, Education Adminstrative Assistant  kareng@southwell.anglican.org

Karen works with the Executive Schools Officer, monitoring the finances for our larger building projects and generally assisting with the finance work for school buildings.  She also spends some of her time assisting the Diocesan Schools Advisers with their administrative work.

Maureen Collins, Church & Schools Link Officer maureencsdo@southwell.anglican.org

Maureen encourages and enables churches to get involved with their local schools. She is involved with Clergy & Lay training, Foundation Governor training, and some INSET. She looks after our Affiliated schools, and takes a particular interest in the Church Secondary schools.

Adam Boyes, Diocesan Schools Worker adamcsdo@southwell.anglican.org

Adam works in schools as a Youth worker, but is also involved in looking at models of school ministry within the diocese. He aims to move groups forward in their thinking and practice, and is available for training for schools work.
