10 year celebrations on Racial Justice weekend
This year’s Racial Justice Sunday will be a double celebration in Nottingham, as the Rainbow Project* in Hyson Green will also be celebrating its 10th anniversary the same weekend.
The weekend of 10th & 11th September will begin on Saturday with a day of events at the Vine Centre in Hyson Green, under the theme of, ‘Hope for generations to come’. On Saturday workshops and drama presentations, will be followed the next day by a special service, with guests from around the city and county, at Mansfield Road Baptist Church in Nottingham on Sunday at 6.30pm. The speaker at the service will be newly ordained clergywoman, the Revd Sonia Barron, who was formerly the Archbishop’s Adviser on Minority Ethnic Anglican Concerns.
The Rainbow Project is an advocacy and support charity, which was started in 2001 to promote racial equality and embrace cultural diversity. Working in partnership with the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham, it provides help for people seeking sanctuary and refugees and helps develop friendships and integration between people seeking sanctuary and people from their local community.
Equality & Diversity Officer for the Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham, Dianne Skerritt, said: “This year we are having a bit of a party to celebrate all the work linked to racial justice that has been going on through the Rainbow Project in the last 10 years. Saturday’s programme has a very interesting line-up of workshops from inclusion and discrimination faced by Travellers to City of Sanctuary issues and interfaith discussions. We’re also very privileged to have the Asylum Dialogues with Ice and Fire Drama group.”
The Saturday programme will run from 10.30am to 3pm and lunch will be provided from 12noon to 1pm.
On Sunday the service, which starts at 6.30pm will include stories from Christians who have been seeking asylum, with music from the Rainbow Choir and Freddie Kofi, who will premier a new song in celebration of the Rainbow project’s 10th anniversary.
