African and Indian Bishops have sporting treat

Visiting bishops from Africa and India will be treated to a taste of Nottinghamshire’s sporting culture at Trent Bridge this month - as part of their packed programme in the county.

The three bishops, from Natal and India will spend the day at Trent Bridge on Saturday, 12th July to watch Nottinghamshire play Surrey – meanwhile their wives will enjoy a shopping and sight seeing trip round Newark.

A total of five bishops will be spending just over a week as guests of the Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham, before they join some 600 bishops from across the world at the Lambeth Conference in Canterbury on 16th July.

The Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham, the Rt Revd George Cassidy said: “We are really looking forward to extending hospitality to fellow bishops from across the world. It will be a great opportunity to exchange ideas and stories and we want them all to enjoy their time with us and have the chance to get a real flavour of life across the diocese – both the challenges and the joys.”

The visiting bishops will include two from South Africa – Bishop Nkosinathi and Bishop Funginkosi and their wives; one from Mexico, Bishop Marcelino and his wife and two from India, Bishop Mar Basilios and Bishop Mar Theodosius.

Their varied programme from arriving on 8th July  to leaving for Lambeth on 16th July, will include visits to inner city parishes, schools, Southwell Minster and a reception at Nottingham Council House. They will have opportunities to preach and take part in church services during the weekend and there will also be a chance to meet people from across the diocese at a special Choral Evensong at Southwell Minster on Sunday 13th July at 3.30pm. The bishops will have a chance to experience a traditional evensong service with the Minster choir and this will be followed by a reception in the grounds of Bishop’s manor.
