Asylum seekers and refugees say ‘thank you’ to the city

Asylum seekers and refugees from around the city will be saying their own special ‘thank you’ to Nottingham for making them welcome and giving them hospitality at a special event this Saturday, 27th March.

‘Thank You Nottingham’ will run from 12pm – 9:30pm at The Vine Community Centre, Hyson Green, when representatives of the city, local MPs and others will be invited the join the special party to thank the people of Nottingham city for the hospitality, support, kindness and many other positive contributions they have made to the lives of new residents.

The event has been organised by African Women’s Empowerment Forum (which consists of women in asylum and refugees) and City of Sanctuary - who are a group of host individuals made up from across the community.

Chair of City of Sanctuary and Equality and Diversity Coordinator for the Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham, Dianne Skerritt, said: “We’re looking forward to a special celebration and it is a chance for those who have been helped to say thank you in their own way. We’re particularly grateful to the Rainbow Project for all they do in supporting asylum seekers and refugees from destitution to positive outcomes for families and individuals. This has also included an immense amount of casework support by Mrs Susannah Estella, the Casework Support Officer, for which we are all very grateful.”

The programme will consist of food, singing, dancing and other forms of entertainment and everyone is welcome. Short speeches of welcome will be given by Alan Simpson MP and Lillian Greenwood (Labour’s prospective parliamentary candidate for Nottingham South) and special guest will also include the Lord Mayor of Nottingham, Cllr Jeannie Packer, and the Archdeacon of Nottingham, the Ven Peter Hill.
