Bishop calls on government for ‘day of rest’

The Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham, the Rt Revd George Cassidy called on the government to review working hours to help reduce NHS costs in questions in the House of Lords today (Thursday, 25th October).

Addressing the issue of work life balance the Bishop said: “What are the consequences for individual health and for demands on the NHS of people regularly working for more than 48 hours per week?"

He went on to ask : “Would the Minister agree that the nation would be healthier, family life more sustainable and the costs of the NHS less if we all stopped work one day each week for rest, relationships and recreation?”

The government response to the Bishop's questions is available on Hansard.
