Bishop of Sherwood to join College of Evangelists

The Bishop of Sherwood, the Rt Revd Tony Porter has been invited to join the College of Evangelists – recognising his ministry both locally and nationally.

The College of Evangelists is a national Church of England organisation, established in 1999, that exists to affirm and encourage the ministry of evangelists who have a ministry across the country. Bishop Tony will be commissioned as a member of the College at a special 10th anniversary celebration for the College of Evangelists at York Minster on Thursday 28th May at 2pm. The Archbishop of York, who is one of the founding members of the College, will speak at the service.

"The College of Evangelists is not a building or a training institute but a body of men and women gifted in evangelism," said the Rt Revd Jonathan Gledhill, Bishop of Litchfield, and the first Chairman of the College. “It enables those with a gift for evangelism that goes beyond the local church to be recognised by the Archbishops and provide a source of fellowship and support by which the gifts of those as yet unknown outside their dioceses can be encouraged and nurtured by the wider church.” He said the aim was to give them fresh confidence to develop their gifts and encourage a new generation of evangelists.

Bishop Tony and Christian writer, Liz Babbs, who is based at St Nic’s Church, Nottingham, are the only members of the College in Nottinghamshire.
