Bishop promotes real Easter Egg at Hucknall school

Hucknall school pupils will be helping the Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham to promote the Real Easter Egg next week – the first Fairtrade charity egg to mention Jesus on the box.

The Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham, the Rt Revd Paul Butler has given his backing to the egg and hopes people will support the new product, which is already a UK top seller. He will be talking about the egg with pupils in Hucknall next Wednesday
(13th April) during a day spent in three different church schools.

After its launch last year, church schools, churches and individuals were invited to place a direct mail order for The Real Easter Egg. Over 70,000 eggs were ordered in the first few weeks overwhelming the manufacturer who had to increase production in an attempt to meet demand. Manchester based Meaningful Chocolate Company, who developed the egg and ran the campaign, believe it is the UK’s biggest selling direct mail order Easter egg.

Photo opportunity:
Bishop Paul will be available for a photo opportunity with boxes of eggs and pupils at The National School, Church of England Technology College on Annesley Road, Hucknall, NG15 7DB at 10am for 10.15am on Wednesday, 13th April 2011.

Bishop Paul said: “The Real Easter Egg has given us the chance to buy an Easter Egg that not only tastes good but does good. I’m very pleased at the success the egg has had so far and hope it will help people to consider the real meaning of Easter, beyond the chocolate treats, revealing the deeper themes of hope and new life.”

More than 10,000 free interactive CDs explaining Easter have also been distributed to Church Schools in the past few months.

Virtual Real Easter Egg hunter
With demand expected to outstrip supply Google Maps is providing the ‘Virtual Real Easter Egg hunter’ which allows people to hunt for an independent shop or church in their area where they can buy the Real Easter Egg. See

Making a big chunk of difference
The retail price of The Real Easter Egg is £3.99. It is made from high quality Fairtrade chocolate. Two charities benefit from the sale of the egg: Traidcraft Exchange receives 30 pence from every egg sold and Baby Lifeline will receive 10% from Real Easter Egg net profits.
