Bishop of Sherwood takes ‘Robin Hood’ role in support for the poor through his new blog
A Nottingham-based bishop has written about his support for the poor and those in debt in his first venture into blogging on the internet. His first offering advocates practical help for those most in need during the current economic climate, rather than finding someone or something to blame. In his new blog, called Tales from Sherwood, the Rt Revd Tony Porter writes: “The impact of the credit crunch is horrible. It may be possible one day to find a scapegoat to allocate blame, but that’s not a big help at the moment to those who are struggling. There’s all the difference in the world between a fence at the top of a cliff and an ambulance at the bottom. Of course we need to create better fences in the medium and long term, but Lucille and I are putting our weight behind ‘Christians Against Poverty’, who are making a significant difference to those being strangled by debt.” Bishop Tony, who is the Bishop of Sherwood (an assistant bishop in the Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham) recently visited Christians Against Poverty HQ in Bradford, where he was very impressed with their compassionate work.
