Bishops to offer ‘shoe shining’ service in city Two Church of England bishops will be offering a free shoe shining service to passers-by and shoppers in the centre of Nottingham next week. The Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham, the Rt Revd Paul Butler and the Bishop of Sherwood, the Rt Revd Tony Porter, will join with city centre clergy to shine shoes on Maundy Thursday ( 21st April 2011) – a day when the church remembers how Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, shortly before his death on the cross. Bishop Paul said: “This is a modern twist on the tradition of foot washing, which in Jesus’ day was done by the lowest servant of all. Jesus challenged his disciples then, and all of us today, to treat each other with such love and respect. We hope to have lots of opportunities to explain this and the message of Easter, while we offer a practical service to people in the city.” The Shoe shine session will run from 10am-12noon, Thursday 21st April, on the pavement outside St Peter’s Church, Nottingham, next door to the Marks & Spencer store. People will be invited to take a seat and have their shoes polished for a few minutes. City centre clergymen, the Revd Christopher Harrison and the Revd Steve Silvester will also be giving out details of their forthcoming Easter services. Ends |
