Bishop to learn about conservation in Notts

The Bishop of Sherwood will be finding out about conservation and talking to those taking part tomorrow afternoon when he visits the headquarters for British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) at Burton Joyce.

The Bishop the Rt Revd Tony Porter will spend the afternoon at the Conservation Training Centre on Chestnut Grove, Burton Joyce, Nottingham NG14 5DZ , from 2:15- 3.30pm on Tuesday, 17th November, with people who are learning about conservation from local colleges and will also enjoy a tour of the site and gardens, with opportunities to meet the staff.

BTCV has been based at Burton Joyce since the 1980s. Some of the key activities based here include practical conservation projects, youth volunteering, and accredited training. The conservation projects team works with landowners to provide opportunities for volunteers to take environmental action in their local communities. While youth volunteering projects help young people to develop their skills and confidence by signposting them to, and supporting them through, voluntary placements.

BTCV staff member, Fiona Binks, said: “We also help people to undertake industry-recognised training in countryside and conservation skills, allowing them to develop their careers. Another significant part of our work is with people with learning difficulties, who undertake less formal qualifications. These allow them to develop greater confidence and independence, making a big difference to their lives.”

Bishop Tony’s visit is one of a series of days he is spending in different parts of the diocese, in addition to his visit to BTCV the bishop will meet with clergy and church members during the morning and the evening.
