Wildflower planting – a practical step for churches environment policy

Children and church-goers will join forces this week to plant some 200 wildflowers in Edingley churchyard as part of a joint green initiative between the local school, the church and the Wildlife Trust.

Pupils from Halam Church of England Primary School, which includes children from both Halam and Edingley villages, will be planting some 200 plugs donated by the Trust in an area of the graveyard.

Photo opportunity:
Children and church members will be available for a photo opportunity at about 10am in Edingley churchyard on Friday, 1st May 2009.

Priest-in-Charge at Halam, the Revd David McCoulough said: “This is a great example of responding to our Diocesan Environment Policy, with the local church, the local school and the wildlife Trust wanting to find simple steps to make difference.”

Head teacher at Halam, Graham Cullen, said the children would be taking part in the planting from 9.30- 12.30 on Friday, 1st May and again at a similar time on Wednesday 6th May. Both members of the church and Diocesan Environment officer, Shelagh Baird-Smith will join the children for the morning activity.

David McCoulough said the scheme was the brain child of church member and PCC secretary, Sally Compton, supported by a small group within the church. He said the aim was to let this area of the churchyard develop naturally, which would hopefully attract more wildlife to the area.

Environment event – Saturday 6th June 2009

Church members are being invited to attend an event to mark the first anniverary of the launch of Growing Greener Churches, the Diocesan Environment Policy, which aims to provide practical help and support to parishes along with celebrating their progress.

The special morning called ‘Growing Greener – bit by bit’ will be at Southwell Minster on Saturday 6th June 2009 from 9.30 – 12.30

Following a welcome from the Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham, the Rt Revd George Cassidy, there will be a talk by Martyn Goss from Exeter Diocese. Martin, who is a teacher with a background in Christian education, has spent most of his career involved in community work and community development. He is a Trustee of Exeter Community Initiatives, Vice-Chair of Devon Transport 2000 and Chair of Devon Action. His joys in life are making people laugh and making them think!

There will also be a wide-ranging marketplace of information from organisations offering practical help to enable churches to Grow Greener. Good examples of what some churches are already doing will also be shown.

Environment officer, Shelagh Baird-Smith said; “Very few parishes have so far registered their Green Champion, but we are sure there is much good work being done that we don’t know about.  Now is the time for churches to show off their environmental credentials! Whether it is a new project or something they’ve been doing for years, we want to hear about it and tell others too. Any churches with a project they would like to share with others should get in touch with us because we would like to help share these through a display of pictures and practical advice –  no matter how large or small, we’d like to hear from them.”
