Education celebrations at churches this weekend

Education will be the hot topic for churches across the country this weekend as they celebrate the annual Education Sunday.

Sunday’s events, (20^th February 2011), will build on the celebrations this year to mark the 200^th anniversary of Church Schools. Across the Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham, Church schools are joining in a special candle journey which has been set up to mark the year, with each school organising its own celebration activities.

To coincide with the celebrations, both the Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham and the Bishop of Sherwood are visiting every church school in the diocese over the coming months, when they will spend time with children in classrooms and join in assemblies.

Director of Education for the Diocese, Claire Meese, explained: “We’re delighted to be marking this special year and we have called the celebrations in our area – ‘Burning Brightly: carrying the light of Christ in Church Schools’. We’re hoping churches will link up with local schools to join the celebrations, which will include a candle travelling around each school during the year.”

The Candle journey began at Holy Trinity Infants in Southwell, in January 2011. The candle will then move from school to school during the course of the year, finally returning to The Minster School in Southwell and a celebration for all the schools at Southwell Minster on  19^th November  at 2pm, 2011.
