Cathedral event aims to grow ‘green’ churches Church members are being invited to attend an eco-event at Southwell Minster on Saturday 6th June 2009 - offering practical support to parishes and celebrating their progress in becoming environmentally friendly. The special morning called ‘Growing Greener – bit by bit’ will run from 9.30 – 12.30 and will mark the first anniversary of the launch of Growing Greener Churches, the Environment Policy for the Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham. Environment officer, Shelagh Baird-Smith said: “We hope to have a ‘library’ of low-energy bulbs for people to try out, as well as information on energy saving in the home and wild-life friendly gardening and land management. There will also be a wide-ranging marketplace of information from organisations offering practical help to enable churches to Grow Greener.” Following a welcome from the Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham, the Rt Revd George Cassidy, there will be a talk by Martyn Goss from Exeter Diocese. Martin, who is a teacher with a background in Christian education, has spent most of his career involved in community work and community development. He is a Trustee of Exeter Community Initiatives, Vice-Chair of Devon Transport 2000 and Chair of Devon Action. His joys in life are making people laugh and making them think! Shelagh Baird-Smith explained: “A few parishes have registered Green Champions, but we are sure there is much good work being done that we don’t know about. Now is the time for churches to show off their environmental credentials! Whether it is a new project or something they’ve been doing for years, we want to hear about it and tell others too. Any churches with a project they would like to share with others should get in touch with us because we would like to help share these through a display of pictures and practical advice – no matter how large or small, we’d like to hear from them.” Stallholders for the Marketplace of information will include: Christian Ecology Link * Operation Noah * Eco-Congregations (with examples from Activities will include the chance to make your own paper pot and plant some wildflower seeds.
