Two Notts clergy become Cathedral canons

Two Nottinghamshire clergy who grew up in the county, will become Honorary Canons of Southwell Minster this month, following their appointment by the Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham.

The Revd Kathryn Herrod, Team Rector of Hucknall, will be installed into the Cathedral’s Eaton stall during an Evensong service on  Sunday 22nd May at 3.30pm. Her colleague, the Revd Phil Williams, Vicar of St James’, Porchester, will also be installed at the same service, taking up the stall of Norwell Tertia Pars.

Kathryn Herrod was born in Sutton-in-Ashfield in Nottinghamshire, and from the age of 6, her ambition in life was to become a teacher. After graduating from the University of Warwick in 1980 with a degree in mathematics and gaining a PGCE from Matlock College of Higher Education, she began teaching maths, working in a number of schools in Nottinghamshire.

Fourteen years later she trained for ministry at St John’s College in Nottingham and was ordained in 1997. After serving her title at St Leonard’s Church, Wollaton, in Nottingham, she moved to become Rector of Warsop with Sookholme, where she remained for 9 years. In 2010 she became Team Rector of Hucknall.

Wider ministerial work includes being a national Vocational Advisor, a member of the Clergy Discipline Provincial Panel, a Diocesan Ministry Development Reviewer, chaplain to the ATC, mentoring and offering spiritual direction. She has been a long-standing member of Diocesan Synod, and is also a qualified MBTI practitioner.

For the past few years Kathryn has co-led pilgrimages to the WW1 battlefields and cemeteries of Northern France and Belgium. She is married to Tony, an organ builder, and they have two adult sons, Mark and James. Her leisure interests range from badminton to Elizabethan dancing and from cross stitch to exploring Europe.
Phil Williams moved to Chilwell, aged 9, when his father became the Vicar at Christ Church in 1974. He first visited the Minster on a Primary school visit. He met his future wife Jane while they were both pupils at Nottingham Bluecoat School. He went to Sheffield University in 1983 to study Biblical Studies and went on to train for the ministry  at Cranmer Hall, Durham. He returned to Sheffield to become a Curate at Hillsborough & Wadsley Bridge working especially with the young people of the area.

In 1994 he moved back to Nottingham as Vicar of St. Barnabas, Lenton Abbey. During his seven years, St. Barnabas became the first church in the country to be awarded the ‘Investors in People’ accreditation. He contributed to the Church of England Board of Education Task Group which published the national report ‘Investing in People in the Church’ in 1999.

In 2002 he became the Vicar of St. James Church, Porchester. He served as a Diocesan representative on General Synod from 2002-2005. He has been the Area Dean of Gedling since 2005. He has worked on various diocesan working groups and is a member of the Bishop’s Council. He has been the Mayor’s Chaplain on two occasions. He is the ‘Faith representative’ on the Gedling Strategic Partnership which he has served on since 2008.  He is passionately committed to the role that the Church of England and its members can confidently play in God’s mission.
Phil plays 5 a side football. He enjoys reading biographies, watching films and TV programmes. His wife works as a teacher at Nottingham Bluecoat School. His son Rob and daughter Sarah are both studying at University.

Two other local clergy, the Revd Canon Tony Evans and the Revd Canon Terry Joyce have come to the end of their terms as Honorary Canons and have both received the title Canon Emeritus of the Cathedral.
