New chaplain for Mothers’ Union members across Notts

The vicar of Burton Joyce, the Revd John Fisher is to take up an additional role in supporting the Mothers’ Union across the county as their chaplain.

John will be commissioned as the new chaplain by the Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham, the Rt Revd George Cassidy at a service at Southwell Minster, on Tuesday, February 17th at 10am.

John said: "The Mothers Union is a superb organisation with its firm commitment to upholding marriage and its support of family life. It has been a privilege to support my Parish Branch over the last eleven years and I'm delighted now to offer help in the wider Nottingham Archdeaconry."

John, who is currently vicar of Burton Joyce, with Bulcote and Stoke Bardolph, came to the diocese in 1998. In 2005 he was appointed as Area Dean for Gedling, taking on additional coordination role for the Bishop.

After studying for a horticultural degree at Bath University, John worked in the industry for four years. He then changed direction working with student Christian groups for three years before training for ordination at Wycliffe Hall theological college in Oxford. He worked in the Diocese of Chelmsford as curate before coming to Nottingham.

Two years ago John took a special interest in art during a three month sabbatical study period when he visited artists and art galleries, along with doing relevant research and reading. He now applies this by connecting issues of faith with modern art helping the dialogue between the church and the arts.

John is married to Alison, the Headmistress of a local Independent School, and has three teenage daughters, Hannah at University studying languages, Esther at college studying retail, and Lydia at school choosing GCSE options.
