New clergy to move into spiritual and caring roles in parishes Ten parishes across Nottinghamshire will be welcoming members of clergy next weekend, when they are ordained into new roles in the Church of England during a colourful service of celebration at Southwell Minster on Sunday, 4th July 2010. The 10 candidates have a wide range of previous occupations, from a scientist and a lawyer to a teacher and a gardener, as well as a school crossing patrol person. Each of them will make their vows to take on very different roles in the church during the special service next month. A further six parish clergy will also be ordained as priests at 5pm on Saturday, 3rd July at the Minster (see list below and editor’s note). PHOTO OPPORTUNITY:
DAVID BERRY. Dave is married to Catherine. Dave held a variety of roles as part of the Soul Survivor team in Watford. Prior to that, he worked as a Civil Servant in London. Having trained at Cranmer Hall in Durham, he will serve his title with the Revd. Mark Adams in the Parish of St John's Mansfield with St Mary’s Ladybrook. ZOE BURTON. Zoe is married to Nigel and they have two teenage children, Jack (18) and Nikki (16). She has previously worked as a Biomedical Scientist at King's Mill Hospital and then alongside her husband’s business. Zoe has trained on the East Midlands Ministry Training Course and will serve her title with the Revd. Christopher Rattenberry at St Peter’s Ravenshead. PAULINE KEY. Pauline is married to Barrie and they have 2 adult sons, Paul and Christopher. Pauline taught for many years in Primary Education before retraining and working as a Complementary Therapist and Lecturer in Further Education. She has trained for ministry on the East Midlands Ministry Training Course and will be serving her title with the Revd. Fiona Shouler at St. Helens Selston and St. Mary Westwood. ELIZABETH MURRAY. Liz was recently widowed in July 2009, having been married to the Revd Robert Murray for 30 years. She has two adult children, Rebecca and William. Liz works as an advocate for adults with learning difficulties and mental health needs. She has trained for ministry on the East Midlands Ministry Training Course and will be serving her title with Revd David Stevenson in the parishes of Eastwood and Brinsley with Underwood. LOUISE NICOLLS. Louise is married to Andy and they have three daughters, Charris (12), Tevi (11) and Ellana (10). Louise worked as a primary school teacher in inner city London before becoming a housewife to care for the family. Having trained at St John's College, Nottingham she will be serving her title with the Revd. Ken Shill in the parish of St Mary's Arnold. TIMOTHY PARKER. Tim grew up in Arnold. After reading Physics at University, he worked for churches in London and Manchester before training for ministry at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford. Tim will serve his title with the Revd. Mark Fraser at St. Luke's Gamston and Bridgford. CAROLINE PHILLIPS. Caroline, originally from Staffordshire, is married to Matt, a teacher. She has previously worked as a chaplaincy assistant at Keele University and as a learning mentor in a secondary school. She trained for ministry at The Queen’s Foundation in Birmingham, and will be serving her title with the Revd. Richard Goodhand in the United Benefice of Ollerton with Boughton. ANDREA RUSSELL. Andrea is married to John and they have two daughters, Megan (16) and Bethany (14). Originally a solicitor, Andrea discovered the exciting world of academic theology (especially Richard Hooker) after returning to University when her daughters started school. She has trained for ministry on the East Midlands Ministry Training Course and will serve her title with the Revd. Canon Sylvia Griffiths at St. Martin’s Sherwood; and will continue to teach and research theology in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Nottingham. BENJAMIN SELBY. Ben is married to Michelle and they have four children: Lenny (11) Leanna (9) Izaac (7) and Isabella (1). Ben previously ran his own landscaping business which he combined with his ministry as Reader in the Fosse Group of Parishes before training for ministry at Ripon College Cuddesdon. He is serving his title with the Revd. Sarah Clark in the Clifton Team Ministry. ROBERT STEPHENS. Bob is married to Barbara. He is originally from London and worked in the Rail Industry for 27 years, before going to Nottingham Trent University to do a degree in Human Services. He then became Assistant Warden at Morley Retreat House. Having trained on the East Midlands Ministry Training Course, he now works as a School Crossing patrol. He will be serving his title with the Revd. Sally Baylis at St. Paul & St. Timothy, Daybook. AMANDA DIGMAN. Amanda is married to Paul and they have two children: Samuel (9) and Emily (7). Amanda was previously a youth worker at St Peter’s Toton and Toton Methodist Church. Having trained at St John’s College, Nottingham, she is serving her title with the Revd. Julia Palmer at St Mary’s Sutton-in-Ashfield. DENISE DODD. Denise worked as Operational Services Manager in the Department of Dietetics & Nutrition at the Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham before training for ministry at Cranmer Hall, St John’s College, Durham. She is serving her title with the Revd. Phil Williams at St James, Porchester. CHRISTINE FRENCH. Christine previously worked at People’s College, Nottingham becoming the Head of Department for Social Inclusion, moving on to specialise in work with substance users. She initially trained for ministry on the East Midlands Ministry Training Course and completed her ordination training at the Queen’s Foundation in Birmingham, researching further her specialism. Christine is married to Lester and is serving her title with the Revd. Jim Wellington in the United Benefice of Keyworth, Stanton on the Wolds and Bunny with Bradmore. PATRICK MACBAIN. Paddy is married to Gabriela and they have one daughter, Anna (1). Paddy has worked as a Lay Assistant for Anglican churches in London and Sevenoaks. Prior to that, he taught English to international students in Southampton and Bournemouth. He trained at Oak Hill College, London and is serving his title with the Revd. Simon Cash at St Anne’s Worksop. CHARLES MOLONEY. Charlie’s wife is also called Charlie. He is something of a nomad having lived in various parts of the country as well as the Czech Republic. Among his many jobs he has taught RE in Croydon and served as a Ministry Assistant at a church in Balham Hill, London. Charlie is serving his title with the Revd. Canon Tony Walker in the Retford Team Ministry. MARTIN STRANG. Martin, originally from Scotland, is married to Rachel and they have two sons, Robbie (8) and Cameron (6). Before his training at St John’s College, Nottingham, Martin enjoyed 30 years in the engineering industry, working in teams, mainly involved with power station boilers. He is serving his title with the Revd. Andy Lord at Awsworth, Cossall and Trowell.
