Search starts for new Anglican bishop for Notts

People in the pews and the wider community across Nottinghamshire are being invited to give their views on what is wanted in a new bishop for the Church of England across Nottinghamshire.

Following the announcement that the present Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham, the Rt Revd George Cassidy, is to retire next summer (2009), views are being sought on the kind of person and the work to be tackled by his successor.

Apart from consultations with clergy and church members, representatives from the wider community are also being asked their views over the coming weeks. Two executives from the Crown Appointments Commission, representing the Archbishops of Canterbury and York and the Prime Minister, will visit the diocese in the coming weeks to interview a number of key people and to take part in a public meeting on the appointment.

The Public Meeting will be held at the Church Hall of St. Ann with Emmanuel, Robin Hood Chase/Church Road, Nottingham at 7pm on Thursday 4th December 2008. The aim of the meeting is to begin to understand what kind of person would be best for the role and the specific needs of the county. It is open to whoever wishes to come along.

Views can also be sent in writing to: The Registrar and Secretary to the Vacancy in See committee, Chris Hodson, Dunham House, Westgate, Southwell, Notts NG25 0JL or email: vacancyinsee@southwell.anglican.org
