New clergy to move into spiritual and caring roles in parishes
Six parishes across Nottinghamshire will be welcoming members of clergy next weekend, when they are ordained into new roles in the Church of England during a colourful service of celebration at Southwell Minster on Sunday, 5th July 2009.
The six candidates have a wide range of work experiences, from youth work and management to engineering, health care and teaching. Each of them will make their vows to take on very different roles in the church during the special service next month.
A further 11 parish clergy will also be ordained as priests at 5pm on Saturday, 4th July at the Minster (see list below and editor’s note). In addition another deacon will be ordained as a priest by the Bishop of Beverley at Worksop Priory at 5pm on Sunday 5th July.
The Preacher at the ordinations at the Minster will be The Revd Rose Hudson-Wilkin, Vicar of Holy Trinity Dalston & All Saints, Haggerston in the Diocese of London. She also chairs the Archbishops Committee for Minority Ethnic Anglican Concerns and was the first black Chaplain to be appointed to the Queen.
The following candidates are due to be ordained as Deacons by the Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham, the Rt Revd George Cassidy at 11am on Sunday 5th July 2009 at Southwell Minster:
AMANDA DIGMAN - Amanda is married to Paul and they have two children: Samuel (8) and Emily (6). Amanda was previously a youth worker at St Peter’s Toton and Toton Methodist Church. Having trained at St John’s College, Nottingham, she will serve her title as Pioneer Curate with the Revds. Charlie Maiden and Julia Palmer in the Parishes of All Saints, Huthwaite and St Mary’s Sutton-in-Ashfield.
DENISE DODD - Denise worked as Operational Services Manager in the Department of Dietetics & Nutrition at the Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust before training for ministry at Cranmer Hall, St John’s College, Durham. She is to serve her title with the Revd Phil Williams at St James, Porchester, Nottingham.
CHRISTINE FRENCH - Christine previously worked at People’s College, Nottingham becoming the Head of Department for Social Inclusion, moving on to specialise in work with substance users. She has trained for ministry initially on the East Midlands Ministry Training Course and has completed her ordination training at the Queen’s Foundation in Birmingham, researching further her specialism. Christine is married to Lester and is to serve her title with the Revd Jim Wellington in the United Benefice of Keyworth, Stanton on the Wolds and Bunny with Bradmore.
PADDY MACBAIN - Paddy is married to Gabriela and they are expecting their first child in mid-June. Paddy has worked as a Lay Assistant for Anglican churches in London and Sevenoaks. Prior to that, he taught English to international students in Southampton and Bournemouth. He trained at Oak Hill College, London and is to serve his title with the Revd Simon Cash at St Anne’s Worksop.
CHARLES MOLONEY - Charlie is excited about getting married to his fiancée, also called Charlie, in the Autumn. He is something of a nomad having lived in various parts of the country as well as the Czech Republic. Among his many jobs he has taught RE in Croydon and served as a Ministry Assistant at a church in Balham Hill, London. Charlie is to service his title with the Revd Canon Tony Walker in the Retford Team Ministry.
MARTIN STRANG - Martin, originally from Scotland, is married to Rachel and they have two sons, Robbie (7) and Cameron (5). Before his training at St John’s College, Nottingham, Martin enjoyed 30 years in the engineering industry, working in teams, mainly involved with power station boilers. He is to serve his title with the Revd Andy Lord at Awsworth, Cossall and Trowell.
The following candidate is due to be ordained as a Priest at 5pm on Sunday 5th July 2009 at Worksop Priory by The Bishop of Beverley:
PHILIP CORBETT - Philip is originally from Sunderland and after studying theology at the University of St Andrews went on to read liturgical studies at Yale University and Ecclesiastical History at the University of Oxford. He trained at the College of the Resurrection, Mirfield, and is serving his title at Worksop Priory with Father Nicolas Spicer SSC
The following candidates are due to be ordained as Priests by the Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham, at 5pm on Saturday 4th July 2009 at Southwell Minster:
KATE BOTTLEY - serving her title in a pioneer curacy with the Revd Dr Richard Kellett at Skegby, Stanton Hill and Teversal.
RICHARD COLDICOTT - serving his title with the Revd Jon Hutchinson in the parish of St Margaret’s, Aspley.
ADRIAN DEMPSTER - is serving his title with the Revd. Wendy Patchell in the parish of St Wilfrid, Kirkby in Ashfield.
CLAIRE GOODE - serving her title with the Revds. Glynis Hetherington and Steve Osman in the South Notts Cluster of Parishes around East Leake, Gotham and Sutton Bonington.
TINA HODGETT - serving her title in a pioneer curacy with Revd Peter Huxtable at St Mark’s, Bestwood Village and Emmanuel, Bestwood.
ELPIETY KAMUYU - Piety is married to Julius and they have four adult children and a grand-daughter. Piety is a banker by profession and she was ordained Deacon in Kenya in 1993, where she served for thirteen years before moving to the UK. She ministered in London, before coming to Nottingham in 2004. She served as a non-stipendiary Deacon at Bilborough and Strelley, before undertaking further ministry training at St. John’s College Nottingham. She has been involved in charity work as a volunteer with Age Concern since she came to Nottingham. She is serving her title at Holy Trinity and the Priory Church in Lenton with the Revd Martin Kirkbride.
PAUL LAWLOR - serving his title with Revd Kathryn Herrod in the parish of St Peter and St Paul Warsop with Sookholme.
JOANNA STEPHENS - serving her title with the Revd Paul Reynolds in the parish of St Michael’s, Bramcote.
DIANE TREGALE - serving her title in a pioneer curacy with the Revd Phil Marsh in the parish of St Wilfrid, Wilford and the Nottingham Emmanuel School.
JOHN TREGALE - serving his title in a pioneer curacy with the Revd Phil Marsh in the parish of St Wilfrid, Wilford and at Nottingham Emmanuel School.
MARGARET WOODWARD - serving her title with the Revd John Chambers in the newly formed Fosse Group of parishes.
Editor’s Note: Clergy in the Church of England generally serve as deacons for one year following their ordination. They are then ordained as priests, from which point they may consecrate the bread and wine at the Holy Communion, pronounce absolution and give a blessing in the name of Christ.
