South African students to enjoy a taste of Robin Hood, the Sheriff and Forest
A group of South African students begin an exchange visit to the city this week – building on the link between the Diocese of Natal and the Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham.
Eight pupils, aged between 15 to 18, from a school in Pietermaritzburg are being hosted by pupils from the Nottingham’s Bluecoat School for the coming week, from 5th -15th March, following a visit by Nottingham students to South Africa last summer.
Youth Worker at the School, David Keetley, who lived out in Natal for a couple of years, said: “Since moving back to the UK I have been actively involved in leading and planning a link trip between the Nottingham Bluecoat School and the St Nicholas Diocesan School in Pietermaritzburg. I have seen how exchanges like this can change young people’s perspectives and be such a positive experience – many of the young people who travelled out last summer had their outlook on life completely changed by the visit.”
The group of young people will be visiting some of Nottingham’s famous landmarks and tourist attractions including the Galleries of Justice, Nottingham Caves and the Castle. They will be enjoying a reception with the Sheriff of Nottingham at 3pm Today
(Thursday, 6th March) and a tour of the Council House ( photo opportunity).
Along with joining in classes and sessions at the school, the groups will visit Wollaton Park on Saturday and on Sunday ( March 9th) they will spend the day in Southwell, when they will join in services at the Minster and meet the Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham for a reception from 11-12noon at the Bishop’s Manor (photo opportunity).
On Monday (10th March), they will get a flavour of the city’s sporting passions, when they travel on the tram to Nottingham Forest’s City ground. They will meet up with members from Forest’s Academy and enjoy a tour of the ground with a chance to watch the team train.
Other highlights of the week will include a visit to York and the railway museum, practice with Bluecoat school musicians and a fish and chip supper.
The group will then join other musicians from Natal for a number of concerts in London and Manchester before returning to Nottingham for special fund raising concert at Bluecoat school on Wednesday 19th March at 7.30pm at the end of their visit.
