Tribute to former Harworth priest The Area Dean of Bassetlaw and Bawtry Deanery and Priest-in-charge of Everton, Mattersey, Clayworth and Gringley-on-the-Hill paid tribute to a retired clergyman who died this week.The Revd John Anthony Britton, a retired priest living in Worksop, died at home after an illness on 5th October 2010 aged 71. Jonathan Smithurst said: "It is a privilege to have known John Britton and to have worked with him. He was a faithful parish priest who rendered many years of faithful service in Harworth. He was also a much loved Rural Dean of Bawtry and will be greatly missed." John was deaconed in 1963 and priested in 1964. He was Curate Sheffield St Swithun from 63-64 and Curate at Sheffield St Aidan with St Luke from 64-66. He was then Curate at Doncaster St George from 66-68 and the Curate at Grantham St Wulfram from 68-72. He was Vicar at Surfleet from 72-76 and Vicar at Bolsover from 76-86. He was Vicar at Harworth from 86-01 and Rural Dean in Bawtry from 96-01. He was given Permission to Officiate in Southwell from 01 and Permission to Officiate in Sheffield from 02. John leaves a wife Dorothy, and two sons; Philip and Andrew. John's funeral is to take place at St. Mary's, Tickhill on Friday 15th October at 11.15 am followed by committal at Rosehill Crematorium, Doncaster at 12.40 pm. Refreshments will be served thereafter at Tickhill Institute.
