Notts bishop and church members support Archbishop in working towards unity before Lambeth Conference

Church members and clergy from across Nottinghamshire have voted to send a message of support to the Archbishop of Canterbury for his work in attempting to maintain the unity of the Anglican Communion in the past few months, following a statement by the Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham..

Members unanimously supported a motion put forward by Beeston member, Robert Cleave, which stated: "The Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham at its Synod unanimously agreed to send a message of support and assurance of prayers to the Archbishop of Canterbury for all that he has done to keep the unity of the Church of England and the Anglican Communion in these difficult days”.

The motion was inspired by the Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham, the Rt Revd George Cassidy, who read out the following statement at the meeting of Southwell & Nottingham Diocesan Synod on Saturday, 23rd February 2008.

“The actions of the Episcopal Church of the United States some five years ago, relating to issues of human sexuality, have resulted in much international debate and fragmentation and were contrary to the mind of the Anglican Communion as a whole.  The subsequent publication of the Windsor Report and its processes, which commented on this issue, were agreed by the General Synod of the Church of England, as was also the Covenant process, which continues to be developed in other provinces of the Anglican Communion.

The position the Communion has now arrived at was clearly articulated by the Archbishop of Canterbury in his Advent letter to the Primates of the Communion and can be found on the Southwell and Nottingham Diocesan Website.

For the benefit of prayer and understanding within the diocese, I feel it important to issue this statement on behalf of the Bishop of Sherwood and myself, and to make it clear that the Archbishop of Canterbury will continue to have our support and prayers in everything that he is doing to hold the Church of England and the Anglican Communion together.  Furthermore, he will have our presence and support as he draws together the Bishops of the Communion for the Lambeth Conference later this year and we will be delighted to share in offering hospitality to our Anglican guests from overseas.

All are welcome on Sunday 13th July at 3.30 p.m. at Southwell Minster for a Special Service of Prayers and Welcome to our overseas guests.”
