Bishop to see where 'Comic Relief' funds are going

As Comic Relief gears up for its annual fundraiser, a local children's charity will be showing the Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham how some of the funds are being spent, when he visits The Children's Society in Nottingham on Wednesday, 16th March.

The Rt Revd Paul Butler, who is the Archbishop's Advocate for Children, will spend time meeting children and young people and staff involved in the project at Newbrook House on Alfreton Road, Nottingham, from 12 noon onwards.

Bishop Paul said: "It will be good to hear from young people themselves about the way they are being supported by the project and to find out how we can help support them in the future. The work with children affected by parental substance misuse, which began in Nottingham, is now providing vital resources for these kinds of projects around the country - it's something we should be proud of and definitely something we can thank Comic Relief for continuing to fund."

PHOTO opportunity:   There will be a photo opportunity of Bishop Paul meeting with staff and young people at 12 noon on Wednesday 16th March at 28 Newbrook House, Alfreton Road, Nottingham.

The Nottingham-based project coordinates the Stars National Initiative which offers resources and advice on best practice to more than 750 projects around the country. After beginning to work across the city with children affected by parental drug or alcohol misuse, the seven year long project accumulated considerable experience and expertise which it now shares nationally.

Jo Manning,The Children's Society in Nottingham Programme Manager, explained that along with the 'Stars' programme, the centre offers mentoring to young refugees and asylum seekers as well as community mentoring for children aged between 11-14 years, linking with local schools including Bluecoat Church of England School, Hadden Park High School and Big Wood Comprehensive.

Jo said that an estimated 15,000 children were affected by parental substance misuse in Nottingham city alone, with 1.3 million affected across the country. The aim of the Initiative is to be a national hub of support and to offer training and consultancy to people working with these children and their families.
