Notts County legend to speak at Southwell Minster

Notts County legend and former Scotland World Cup player, Don Masson will be talking about his Christian faith at a special sport evening at Southwell Minster on Friday, 6th June 2008.  

Scottish-born Don Masson, began his career with Middlesborough, before joining Notts County, then Queen’s Park Rangers and Derby County, before returning to Notts in 1978 and seeing their promotion into the First Division. He won 17 caps for Scotland, which included famously missing apenalty with the score at 1-1, in a 3-1 defeat by Peru in the 1978 FIFA World Cup.

Don, who has retired to Nottinghamshire and runs a small hotel with his wife, will talk with the Bishop of Sherwood about his Christian faith, as part of the Celebration of Sport event. The evening will also include a talk by Graham Daniels – General Director of the national charity, Christians in Sport.  

The evening, which will start at 7.30pm, follows on the appointment of the Church of England’s first Sport Ambassador, Tim Friend, who began work in January.  Tim said: “This should be a great evening for anyone interested in Sport. It’s fantastic that Don Masson is able to join us for the event. I know he’ll have some great stories to tell. The evening is open to anyone, not just football fans, and I hope it will be the first of many events like this in the county.”
