Scaffolding goes up at Southwell Minster

Scaffolding will be going up at Southwell Minster next week as the cathedral begins to get ready for essential repairs to its ancient central tower.

The scaffolding is due to start going up on Monday (13th August 2007).

Director of Fund Raising, Charlie Leggatt said the appeal to raise funds for the central medieval tower had been going well. He said: As a “little guy” amongst cathedrals, the amount of money donated to us by grant-making charitable trusts has been hugely heartening and there is no doubting the affection in which Southwell Minster is held nationwide. The good news is that we are but £45,000 shy of the £600,000 target. The not so good news, of course, is that the final furlong of any appeal is obviously the hardest of all! But £45,000 is a tangible sum in context. So, if there are well-wishers out there reading this who have not yet donated, I would urge you please to reach for your cheque books and help the tower appeal over the finishing line. In 2008, we celebrate the 900th anniversary of the start of construction of the Nave; it would be marvellous to have the tower “done and dusted” in time for this birthday year. “

For further information, please go to the Fabric and Fundraising page of the Southwell Minster website: wwwsouthwell.anglican.org or call Charlie  direct on 01636 817286.
