Two South African clergy join racial justice events for Notts


Two senior South African Clergymen will be welcomed by church leaders in Nottinghamshire this week, when they arrive tomorrow (Saturday, 11th September 2010) to build on the partnership between the Diocese of Natal and the Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham.

The Very Revd Ndabezinhle Sibisa, Dean of Pietermaritzburg and the Ven Ivan Gunkel, Archdeacon of Pietermaritzburg, will be welcomed by clergy from Southwell Minster as they join in the weekend of events linked to Racial Justice in Nottingham and Newark. Members of the congregation of Southwell Minster will also have a chance to meet them on Sunday
(12th September).

The Dean of Southwell, the Very Revd John Guille said: “We are looking forward to this visit very much and we’re so pleased that they are able to join with us for  our ‘Green as a Leaf’ lecture series and our Harvest Supper Celebration on Saturday evening, which promises to be a very special event. I am sure the visit will help us all to deepen and develop the link between our two dioceses.”

The two visitors will enjoy a packed week of activities and visits around the diocese, which will include, seeing the sights in around the city of Nottingham on Tuesday, 14th September. On Wednesday they will be guests of the Minster School in Southwell for the day, meeting pupils and staff and sharing their own experiences with young people.

At the end of the week on Friday they will join in the ‘Green as a Leaf’ series of lectures and workshops based around the Cathedral and School of Animal, Rural & Environmental Sciences at Brackenhurst Campus, when delegates and day visitors will discuss issues around the theology, ecology and the environment. There will also be a series of practical workshops with nature walks, art and poetry.

There will be an opportunity for photos of the two visitors with the Dean of Southwell and the Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham on Friday, 17th September at 9am outside Southwell Minster’s West Doors, before the morning lecture begins at 9.15am.
